The Babbacombe Cliff Railway has received national recognition in the Association
for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE), annual awards. The winners of the second
ACE Engineering Excellence Awards were announced at a packed gala dinner event
at the Victoria Park Plaza hotel in London on Wednesday 13 May 2009.
The cliff railway, which was the subject of an extensive refurbishment programme in
2005, was entered into the awards by LECS (UK) Ltd who were the consultants to
Torbay Council for the project.
Hosted by broadcaster and journalist Nicky Campbell, the awards showcased
consultancy and engineering firms who had demonstrated a high degree of
achievement, value and engineering excellence over the last 12 months. Speaking
after the event, ACE chairman Geoff French proclaimed the awards as a boost to the
sector, and paid tribute to the number of pioneering projects that had been
honoured.
David Pickering, Associate Director at LECS (UK) picked up the award at the event
and said that it was a difficult project but the final product is one that we can all be
proud of and will benefit the people of Torbay for many years to come.
Cllr. Dave Butt, Cabinet Member for the Environment said he was very proud that
Torbay Council had chosen to commit funding to this excellent project. With the
original engineering dating back to the 1920's , it was not a simple project by any
means. We congratulate LECS (UK) for their work on the Railway and for winning
this highly prestigious award.
